Gareth Rees KC, called to the Bar in 1981 and appointed King’s Counsel in 2003, is a distinguished barrister renowned for defending clients in high-profile criminal and fraud trials. His expertise has earned him recognition as a leader in his field by all major legal directories.
In 2012, he became Executive Counsel at the Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board, later serving as Executive Director of Enforcement at the Financial Reporting Council. He led a successful team investigating financial reporting and audit misconduct affecting the UK public interest, particularly after the financial crisis.
From 2017 to 2023, Gareth was a partner at two global US law firms, advising clients worldwide, including in the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. His work spanned sanctions advice following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and leadership in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters. He retired from partnership in 2023 and rejoined the Bar at Doughty Street Chambers.
As a moderator and speaker, Gareth has provided guidance on UK sanctions to major global financial institutions in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, he served on his firm’s global steering group for Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters, advising on issues such as the Modern Slavery Act, UK sustainability disclosure requirements, human rights, and supply chain compliance.
Gareth brings exceptional insight into the influence of domestic politics and geopolitical factors on law, regulation, and global business. He has served as a judicial member of the English Rugby Football Union Disciplinary Panel for over 15 years and frequently shares his expertise through keynote speaking and panel facilitation on legal, regulatory, and corporate risk topics.
