More About
Steph McGovern’s professional journey began in engineering, not journalism or economics. At 19, she was honoured with the Young Engineers Club’s ‘Young Engineer For Britain’ award. After completing an engineering degree and working at Black+Decker, she was named an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021, recognised as a “tireless champion for engineering and vocational skills.”
Steph transitioned into broadcasting through work experience at the BBC on Tomorrow’s World, eventually securing a role as a current affairs researcher. She quickly moved into producing, becoming the main producer for Radio 4’s Today programme and the lead producer for business news on the BBC’s flagship One, Six, and Ten O’Clock news bulletins.
Steph’s hosting and moderating talents have shone through in numerous roles. She has been a prominent presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live and the main business presenter on BBC Breakfast. Additionally, she hosted CBBC’s Pocket Money Pitch and has fronted popular series including Newsround, Shop Well For Less, Watchdog, Easy Ways to Live Well, Inside John Lewis: Trouble at the Tills, Walking With…, and Steph’s Packed Lunch.
Appearances on entertainment shows such as Celebrity Catchphrase, The Masked Dancer, Celebrity Bear Hunt, and Blankety Blank further demonstrate her versatility as a host.
Steph co-hosts The Rest is Money podcast alongside Robert Peston, expertly moderating discussions on pressing business topics like technological innovation, political shifts, global markets, and sustainability.
Beyond the screen and microphone, Steph is dedicated to mentoring young people in her native Teesside and running educational workshops across the North East. She is a patron for Rubies, a charity supporting disadvantaged children, and a former champion Irish dancer.
In July 2025, Steph expanded her storytelling skills with the publication of her debut thriller, Deadline. The story centres on a news broadcaster forced to follow a hacker’s commands live on air to protect her family.
Steph is openly gay and has faced online trolling due to her sexuality, but remains widely respected for living authentically in the public eye. In 2021, she was named one of the Top 10 LGBT+ Broadcasters, recognising her positive impact on the industry and the LGBT+ community.
